Review Module Three: MyPyramid.gov

In earlier formats, the United States Department of Agriculture offered the Food Guide Pyramid as a means to enable the public to prioritize their food choices while providing a template to enable Americans to “eat healthy”.  The Food Guide Pyramid graphic provided a good format for recommending appropriate meal composition with detailed serving sizes while illustrating how much food we should consume in a day.   The newest version of the Food Guide Pyramid retains the earlier graphic features within a new format while providing tools designed to enhance personal success.  The new access point for the USDA food guidance system is located online at MyPyramid.gov.

The newest approach to providing nutrition information is personalized and based on the premise for the MyPyramid.gov graphic that “one size doesn't fit all.” The MyPyramid.gov website and graphic can help teachers, parents, and students of all ages choose foods in portion sizes that are right for them.  MyPyramid serves as an evidence based source of nutrition information with self assistance features that can guide all age groups, especially children and adolescents, to better health through good nutrition and physical activity. The MyPyramid.gov website tools utilize the age, sex, and activity level of an individual to generate a nutrition plan.  These tools develop nutrition plans with a specific calorie pattern while providing tips on how to get the recommended servings of foods, lists of foods, and a food gallery with pictures of foods in their appropriate portion sizes.
