MyPyramid for Kids Classroom

Classroom Materials are educational materials developed at the elementary school level to help children learn the MyPyramid graphic and the food guidance system. Lesson plans for teachers are available in three levels: Level 1 (grades 1-2); Level 2 (grades 3-4); and Level 3 (grades 5-6).

These tools provide teachers with graphics designed to hold the attention of your students.  Nutrition and physical activity messages help children make lifestyle choices while learning to chart, color, and practice matching skills.

Grades 7 -12                                                            

Have students enter their personal information and print out a personal plan.  Have the class take their meal plan one step further and design a diet plan of their own based on the MyPyramid.gov recommendations.  Compare different individual plans and discuss how different plans can all be healthy.

Students will become familiar with the latest dietary guidelines from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, work in groups to find recipes that will help students meet the dietary guidelines, and develop a class cookbook of favorite recipes.

Lesson plans included within this kit encourage students to eat healthy, keep moving and take action! Jump Start Teens lesson plans have been updated to include the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Spanish-language worksheets and media resources are available.

Fat - Lesson 1 – Ideal Weight, Cultural Stereotypes, and Eating Disorders

Fat - Lesson 2 – Obesity, Eating Habits, and Weight Loss

These lessons evaluate the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the application of the guidelines for a healthy diet by allowing students to compare them to their own eating habits.  Students are presented with information that teaches safe behaviors for maintaining a healthy weight. Students also learn to analyze the food pyramid, fast-food versus health-food nutrition, and the causes of obesity.  Hyperlink to the lesson plans by clicking on the lesson titles.
